Devizes Wharf (Monday 1st August 2016)

I mentioned that I was keeping tabs on a number of swan families at the moment and so here is another. Just a little further east from Caen Hill lies Devizes Wharf and as I passed on foot underneath the bridge by the Wharf I saw this lovely group gliding elegantly towards me. They didn't stay long when they discovered I had no food to give even though it was lunchtime and continued onwards with their bills raised snootily in the air, to try their luck with the next moored narrowboat, but without luck. With seven cygnets they are just one short of the Marlborough family.

Returning to my psychedelic week of tunes, Heavy Jelly came about because the listings magazine Time Out wrote fictitious reviews of a band that didn't exist with that name as a joke to trap hipsters who would claim to have seen them live. Inevitably, two bands sprang up with that name, to cash in on the publicity, and these were one of them. The Newcastle band Skip Bifferty had recently disbanded but quickly found a new drummer and regrouped to record this single, written primarily by Colin Gibson, released in January 1969. Two of the band (Mickey and John) subsequently became well-known in Ian Dury's Blockheads.
The song didn't trouble the charts but is fondly remembered because it was included in stereo on the album sampler Nice Enough To Eat a few months later. That was a different version though, with much more prominent electric guitar burying the powerful piano riff, so I have made sure that this is the superior mono single mix.
