I had never imagined myself sweeping a chimney!

I have lived in this house for over 20 years and put up with a fireplace I hated. I decided to do something about it and asked my brother to remove it. The bricks came tumbling down in what seemed to be a very scary way. Where was the lintel? Was the fire really holding up the whole of the chimney breast? Would the bricks stop falling? At last they did. We removed some of the rendering and found an arch more than halfway up the wall. The arch that is holding the rest of it up. Phew!


I wanted a recess and I have certainly got one now! The amount of rumble in here was unbelievable. I don’t know what I am going to do with this space but it seems to be crying out for a very large wood burner.
