Dyrham Park
“Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
C.G. Jung
A day full of symbolism as we head off to Dyrham Park, a National Trust property on the way to Bath, for the day. It's grey and drizzling when we leave S.Wales, but by the time we arrive there patches of blue sky have appeared and it's dry.
As we enter the grounds a Ranger offers to take us on a walk "to see the deer". As we have a guest with us, E, we give it a miss. I say to K that today I'll let the deer come to us. Within 5 minutes we get our first sight of a group of deer on the edge of a nearby copse.
Volunteers in the house tell us of the rich symbolism in the paintings that adorn the house, one in particular has several "unusual" symbols - for a 17th century that is - parrots included. Orange trees planted around the grounds are said to have displayed the owners support for the King, William III [of Orange]. The symbolism is sometimes arcane but nonetheless intriguing. There's a seven of hearts playing card making its way out of the frame of one painting... I venture that it's an early reference to Enid Blyton and a "secret seven"... Ideas on a postcard please.
