King's Head

There are plans to spend a lot of money on the town of Leatherhead. At the moment it does not flourish. It has a tortuous one way system, and a small shopping mall with a tortuous multi-storey car park. New plans have been drawn up to address these problems, including developing the frontage on the River Mole. It all sounds very attractive.
Over the years Leatherhead has seen many changes. King's Head Alley use to lead, not surprisingly, to The King's Head public house. The original inn was destroyed by fire in 1794. The replacement was described as "one of the beauties of the town" but this didn't stop its demolition in 1930 and its replacement by a modern public house. This building in turn was converted into shops in 1961.
Now the alley just leads to the backs of shops and its most attractive feature is the name over the entrance, made by the local Fire and Iron Gallery.
