Little windows

Round the back of our church is this area with lots of little windows. I am not aware of them from the inside. I wonder why they were there. This is a very old part of our ancient church, St Nicolas, Great Bookham.
We've had rain! The garden has been freshened up, and I don't have to water tonight!
