A winters day in summer
The weather forecast was for dull and cloudy today so we decided to go over to Hastings to see the newly rebuilt pier. We got as far as Folkestone before meeting a diversion which eventually pushed us on to the M20 and then the fun really began! The motorway was closed - not sure why but must have been something quite serious. We eventually got off with M foaming at the mouth (not the best person in traffic 'situations'!) and proceeded to Hastings where the rain was lashing down and you could hardly see your hand in front of your face. Saw the pier and walked out to the end; l must say it was great to have it rebuilt again but deary me, surely a little more imagination could have gone into the design (l think it is possibly worse than Deal pier). The photo shows the pier and the tent on the beach houses an optimistic fisherman.
An interesting fact is that during World War ll the pier was actually cut in half as a way of stopping the enemy parking their boats and just walking into town.
