Abendlicht (Sunset)
We had an evening at the Wartturmfest* in Bierstadt** - another one of the many little district festivals that we have here.
Basically all you need is a tent that sells beer & wine and another that grills sausages and the like and a stage where enthusiastic people sing Schlager (popular songs) and away you go.
It was quite popular, lots and lots of groups were there at the same time as us and you just know that later they'll all be sitting there and schunkeln** to the music.
I'm not really a Schunkler (a new German word to mark the occasion) but I do like these kind of festivals. I must learn the 40 or so songs that EVERYBODY knows (the "Living Next Door To Alice" in German is a massive hit and everyone sings along including the "who the f*** is Alice" bit - it's bizarre).
The group of women next to us were just getting into the swing of things as we left but you just know that they were determined to have an awesome time.
I like that about Deutschland. A lot.
*Wartturm is a kind of watchtower. This one was surrounded by trees bigger than it.
** Literally "City of Beer", sadly not quite true
***to sway to-and-fro to music. This is really very Deutsch.
