On the back approach to Clare College stands a bronze statue ,2006, of Confucius (Kong Fu Zi) by Wu Weishan of China, a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors. He is a pioneer and advocate of "freehand sculpture," blazing a trail of expressive culture in China. His statue Confucius, who was a Chinese reformer and philosopher 551 BC to 479 BC, vividly portrays a high forehead, elongated ears and a long beard. This iconic statue is inspired by the grotto sculptures of ancient China.
