A dish of wild cherries
I grew my cherry tree from a sucker I took when 'geans' (the Scottish name) were being uprooted from a nearby hedgerow. You have to be quick to get the fruit before the birds so I rarely leave them to reach full dark red-ripeness. They will still be good in a clafoutis or to flavour alcohol.
Traces of this native fruit have been found in Bronze Age settlements. We picked and ate them off the bushes growing in the Dorset stone quarries after The Old Man's scattering last week.
My thanks to all who commented so warmly on that blip.
