The Roman Lakes at Marple

Two enterprising men bought the land that had once contained England's very first cotton mill, Mellor Mill. The mill buildings had been demolished and the men believed that visitors would flock there because of it's outstanding beauty. However, because it was nothing more than an old mill pond, nobody was interested. The men got their heads together and subsequently advertised the venue as original Roman Lakes. Within twelve months, special trains had to be put on to accommodate the 20,000 plus visitors that would arrive every Sunday, to picnic there and to take out rowing boats, and the two clever men became rich.
To this day it remains named The Roman Lakes!
