Anticipation

I am always intrigued by this bronze sculpture in a busy shopping area of a mother, two children and a dog.
It was unveiled by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh during their Golden jubilee visit to the town of Uxbridge back in 2002 following its presentation to the town by the Hillingdon Arts Association.
The £52,000 sculpture was by the artist Anita Lafford and now commands a prominent position in the main square of the town.
But it is the name which has always intrigued me —Anticipation. But anticipation of what?
The Arts Association suggest you can interpret it as you wish.  Some suggest it could be a young family waiting to meet other family members, expecting the arrival of friends from the station which is only yards away, or maybe looking forward to going to the shops in Uxbridge, even perhaps visiting the surrounding countryside or, taking a longer perspective, anticipating the future for the two children.

Whatever the intention, it certainly commands attention, and for me, like today,  poses that unanswerable question each time I see it
