Re-Using across continents
We have been looking for a little cupboard to fit in our small hallway, for what seems like forever. It has to be an awkward size to fit.
We didn't expect to find it at the Tatton Flower Show, but that's what happened. We collected it today from a nursery near Jodrell Bank. It's constructed out of wooden parts which have been removed from a derelict textile mill in India. We are going to get it painted, although it looks good (but very quirky) as it is.
The nursery has lots of other stuff from old mills and other places in India. Including an array of doors the like of which I've never seen in this country. I liked the juxtaposition of these ones with the plants.
The human angle - well, these pieces meant something to people thousands of miles away in India, and they will mean something to people here in the UK. It would be really interesting to know their original contexts, and the people who passed through the doorways they protected. And their new homes here in the UK, and who buys them and for what purpose.
