Oregon Coast at Pacific City

We drove down the beach about one hour to a beautiful little town which swells in population during the summer months. More than 70% of the homes are vacation rentals or second homes. This photo is taken from the North looking south at Haystack Rock which is a monolithic rock rising from the Pacific Ocean. The extra shot is taken from the South looking North showing the beach and point on the left side of the Blip photo. That sand dune is really big and high; the people climbing up it look like ants in this photo, if you can see them at all.  Pacific City is where dory boats launch directly from the shoreline into the ocean; the special boat was developed for this shoreline which has the perfect decline into the ocean for launching and beaching these boats that carry fishermen quickly to the fishing grounds......well not too quickly if they are going for tuna, I just heard them say they had to go out 45 miles to find the fish today!  The surfers are supposed to stay on the south side of the area and the dory boats to the north.....but sometimes they dangerously cross paths and a surfer was killed by a returning dory boat a couple years ago. We met the young man who was with his father in that dory boat that fateful day; he and his dad may never get over the sadness. Of course, the family of the surfer is grieving, but sometimes we forget that the person who survives an accident is traumatized too.

Oh, by the way, the mother on the cell phone caused quite a stir yesterday.....yes, I agree she should have been playing with her child....but we have to admit someone could get a similar shot of us when we SHOULD have been doing something else, but we were looking at our phone, right? Yeah, me too.

Thanks for visiting and continuing to be interested my photos and what I have to say. My life is enriched by such a positive supportive community.
