Rest Day
No orienteering today so we took the bus to Surlej and the Corvatschbahn then rode the cable car up to the middle station at Murtel and set out on the path to Fuorcla Surlej at 2755m. We took out time along the path because it was lined once more with beautiful alpine blumen in pinks and yellow and purples, and this time we spotted three different deep purple gentians. Reaching the mountain hut at Fuorcla Surlej we stopped to enjoy the view of the Bernina Mountain Range and attendant glaciers from the terrace over a cuppa, fabulous!
Descending towards Pontresina gave us views of the high valley floor as it grew nearer, with the River Roseg in the bottom flowing out from the glacial moraines with more worrying evidence of how the glaciers have retreated in recent years.
The walk wove for several kilometres through pine forest before reaching Pontresina so we were glad that we stopped off at Roseg Gletscher for yummy apfelstrudel mit vanilla soss and drinks before tackling the last leg!
My blip shows Tony descending with Piz Bernina and Piz Roseg in the background. Lots more mountains and blumen in my holiday album here!
