St.Swithun's Day
Bishop of Winchester in around 850.
It seemed that everyone wanted a piece of him when he died.
He apparently mended some broken eggs with a wave of his hand and was venerated throughout the land. His head ended upon Canterbury, an arm in Peterborough and the rest to Winchester Cathedral. In 971 his bones were moved from one spot to another and there was a great storm - the date was 15th July and became known as his Saint's day - and was commemorated in this verse :
St Swithun's Day, if thou dost rain,
For forty days it will remain,
St Swithun;s Day, if thou be fair,
For forty days 'twill rain nae mair.
I was holding my breathe, and guess what ? I think we've got away with it !
