What do you write about a day like today?  Dear God in heaven.

"Dear Diary,
This morning I awoke to learn that a maniac had driven a big lorry through the Bastille Day celebrations in Nice, killing 84 people including several children. This evening, an attempted military coup in Turkey means that my friends (all safe) are in lock-down on campus tonight as they listen to military aircraft and gunfire in the streets of Istanbul. I am awake most of the night with FB posts and national and international news online.  Other than this, it was a rather ordinary day, spent at home with my bro.  Here's a picture of the flowers I bought for the vase Dad always kept on the hearth to 'cheer up the lounge'."
