A Sea of Cotton Grass
Totally different day today from yesterday - here on Norland Moor it was dismal and wet. Brightened up somewhat by the Cotton Grass (Eriophorum angustifolium). This plant is the County flower of Greater Manchester.
The American Civil War disrupted the supply of cotton from America and created the Lancashire Cotton Famine (1861-1865). In desperation this plant was tried as an alternative, but there was nowhere near enough and the strands were too weak and too short anyway.
