I wonder

Looking closely just now I see that this Black Headed Gull on Portobello beach is wearing a ring. I wonder where it was ringed? And will technology ever reach the stage that we can tag birds in such a way that you only need to use an app on your phone to see where they have been. Obviously there is already high tech tracking of specific birds as part of detailed studies but I mean replacing the metal leg rings used by licensed bird ringers with something that can be detected from a distance and without having to capture the bird again.
