There is a long tradition of the quick-witted servant who manipulates and exploits his pompous employer. I am the Minister’s Permanent Secretary. I am the real power in the Ministry. Working for my own ends, delighting in my own cleverness. I am Jeeves to the Minister’s Bertie Wooster. I am Harlequin, my brightly-coloured costume turned to pinstripe grey. I am the schemer, turning from the other players and winking at you, the audience.
