Waiting for the Nightjars

Our walk this evening was around the woods at  Bellever. It is a walk we have done in previous years at this time of the year and the purpose was to hopefully hear and see the Nightjars. They are a migratory bird spending the winter period in Africa. They can be found on heathlands, moorlands and open woodlands in the south of England but they only come out at dusk.

Shortly after this photograph was taken we heard their distinctive sound in the woods around us and then one landed on the track just in front of us. This was followed by a flying display by two of them. It was difficult waiting because the midges were out in abundance - and very irritating they were too.
