The Old Homestead....

....of Solomon Juneau, the founder of Milwaukee. He was born in Canada in 1793, & became a fur trader. When the American Fur Company established a Trading Post here in 1818, Solomon was offered the job of agent, which he accepted. He loved that the area around here bordered Lake Michigan, so purchased a huge amount of land along side it & named it Juneau Town. (a bit narcissistic if you ask me!) He became the areas' first Postmaster, then the first president of the Village of Milwaukee, & in 1846 became the City of Milwaukee's first Mayor. "Juneau Town" may have disappeared, but his old cabin--the first place he built & lived in, around 1822--is located on what used to be his land, & is now "Juneau Park". His statue sits on the bluffs just down from the cabin, facing West so that he can always keep an eye on "his" city--the cabin is located just off--you guessed it-- Juneau Avenue! :)) 
We walked through Juneau Park today--at a very reduced speed, as I'm still stiff from all the walking we did yesterday--& although I'd been to the park before I never went all the way down to the end, so hadn't even known the cabin was there.
