Over Yonder

Are We Not Men? We Are Devo!

My Dear Fellow,

I heard some American tourists absolutely cracking up when they saw this statue on Shandwick Place.

I must admit, I found it funny too. Especially the fact that a seagull added insult to injury by landing on Lord Snot's head.

What the Americans might have found even funnier is that this seems to happen to this particular statue on a fairly regular basis. I think the cones had only just been taken down, and now a week later they are back again, augmented by the "To Let" sign.

Okay, in the name of historical accuracy I have looked it up. It is not really a statue of Lord Snot. It is actually William Gladstone who served more terms as Prime Minister than anyone else (four).

In the statue, he is flanked by figures symbolising Eloquence and History and not by members of Devo at all. Actually, according to his Wikipedia page Gladstone doesn't sound like a bad sort - he opposed the Opium Wars for a start - so is not deserving of my mockery, or of seagull poop on his head.

But I can't help myself. Whip it good, William. Hee hee hee.
