Nice

Spelled "gneiss" - this is very, very old rock indeed, but made out of even older stuff that has been squeezed, melted and folded. Underneath it at this spot is layer upon layer of conglomerate rock, like concrete full of small stones. Somehow, a pebble that was a pebble 600 million years ago found its way into my pocket, smooth sandstone on one side, and polished shiny by the sea on the other. They say a week is a long time in politics, but this is Deep Time - a bit of a leveller ...
