A Fisherman's Lot

Spent most of the day cutting back Rhododendron bushes in the garden and burning the cuttings. It was hard work on what turned out to be quite a nice day. At least it stayed dry until late afternoon when a few of us erected the church marquee at the village hall for another wedding on Wednesday. Forecast not looking good for the couple's big day, but who knows maybe they have got it wrong!

This evening, despite being knackered after the exertions of the day, we went for a walk down the Shore Road. Mrs B knew I had an alternative motive as soon as she saw the camera over my shoulder. I was hoping for a good sunset, however the colours never really materialised and we made our way back to the harbour where we got talking to the owner of the main boat in the picture and his wife, who had driven to the harbour to collect him after his 12 hours or so at work.

I enquired as to how good the prawn fishing had been and got a look that indicated it was bad. But how come? I had read only recently about how plentiful the prawns were in the Clyde and how boats were coming here from the east coast, where they were poor. Turns out most of the quota for this area has been used up just as the prawns have appeared in big numbers on the east coast, driving down the price because of the oversupply. Low quota and low prices is not making the local fishermen happy!

As one unhappy fisherman and his wife left I wandered back down the pier for one last blip of the dying embers of the sunset.
