Not a Bee Orchid!
Although I was lucky enough to meander through the extremely narrow Dorset lanes - Evershot, Hooke, Rampisham, Powerstock and finally reach my destination of Eggardon Hill, I didn't actually fulfil the purpose of my mission to photograph a bee - orchid. It's a bit late for them now but I'd read that they are to be found on the western ramparts of Eggardon Hill fort. However, as I strode across the field approaching the fort, I'm embarrassed to admit that I was soon retreating hastily, back to my car as the bullocks in the field were a bit too inquisitive for my liking!! Memories of accounts in the press of people being trampled by them didn't help.
The road at Eggardon actually follows the narrow ridge of the rampart so that was exciting when I met someone coming the other way!
I ended up at Mangerton Mill, just outside Bridport and had a cuppa outside ,to the sound of the water rushing over the mill- wheel. It seemed a popular spot with a big group of Australians joining me.
The lanes were full of umbelliferae as well as the wonderful honeysuckle.
Maybe next year for the bee- orchids. :)
