Anthony Doerr's novel takes two young protagonists on opposite sides of the war and follows their separate trajectories to the same moment in besieged Saint Malo. One is a blind French girl and the other a young German soldier barely out of school, with a talent for radio. Doerr is a fantastic storyteller and his characters are beautifully drawn: I was gripped.
