Two's Company...

...and three's definitely a crowd!

It's fascinating to watch the fledgling Downy Woodpeckers at the high feeder. One will be there, quietly dining on sunflower seeds, and then another one lands, often out of sight around the back of the post, or perhaps to the side, and inches its way around to where the first diner is.

Much head bobbing ensues, with them alternately turning their heads away from each other and then looking daggers at each other with the feathers on the crowns of their heads raised, as you can see on the female on the left here.

All bets are off when a third fledgling flies into the party! This one stayed just a few seconds, long enough to make clear his superiority to the other two, and then headed to the lower feeder, which he had to himself.

I think I'm turning into a nature photographer... I can't stay away from the wildlife in our back yard!
