IN THE BOX

Boxes, little boxes - I have always been fascinated by signal boxes - sad ! To me they are wonderful buildings, with many individual designs and functions. Look out for more before the year end !

Recently Scarborough lost their signal gantry and their huge 120-lever Falsgrave signal box near the station, built in 1907. I believe that it has gone to a preserved railway.

This is the signal box at Seamer Station, run by Network Rail.

Seamer Station was opened in 1845 on the York to Scarborough mainline. It also currently has a junction with the line to Bridlington, East Yorkshire. The Forge Valley Railway line also linked to this station in the past, before it closed in 1963.

Seamer had a unique feature of two signal boxes side by side. Sadly, one was demolished in 1993, but this 1911 signal box still stands next to the platform, with the front windows boarded up and painted green. More importantly it now controls traffic in Scarborough as well.
