Neither Here Nor There

By Droog

Once Upon A War . . .

On 2 July 1644 the battle of Marston Moor was fought between the allied armies of Parliament under Sir Thomas Fairfax (Oliver Cromwell commanded the cavalry) and the Scottish Covenanters, and the King's army under Prince Rupert of the Palatine and the Marquess of Newcastle. The result was the defeat of Royalist forces in the North of England and the beginning of the end of the First English Civil War.

On the way to the battle, the Parliamentary forces stopped off in Otley and drank my local, The Black Bull, which was newly opened, dry.

(OK, it rained yesterday. A lot. So I went to the second day of the re-enactment. Nu, shoot me.)

I wonder if, after the folly of Brexit, we shall see a similar tragedy again. Heaven forfend.
