Died 25th July 1916, age 29, of wounds at Battle of the Somme.
Family home: Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh

Pte Carmichael also has a war grave in Etaples War Cemetery, one of 10,771 WW1 Identified Commonwealth Burials. Etaples was where many of the hospitals and Red Cross were stationed.

There is a Plaque on the Church of Authuille dedicated to 15th Glasgow Tramways, 16th Glasgow Boys Brigade & 17th Glasgow Commercials Highland Light Infantry Battalions.

17th Highland Light Infantry - Glasgow Commercials formed 10th Sept 1914 by the Chamber of Commerce Glasgow. Recruiting from Royal Glasgow Technical College, former pupils of Glasgow city schools, business houses and trades in city and district.

Registered 12th Sept 1914, and sent to war 23/11/1915 landing at Boulogne.

Part of the 97th Brigade in the 32nd Division fighting at the Battle of Albert at the start of The Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916.

7.23am Over the top... heading towards Leipzig Trench and holding the La Boiselle northwards to Authuille & to Threipval - Aveluy crossroads.
