Anniversary

Somme. The whole history of the world cannot contain a more ghastly word.
— Friedrich Steinbrecher

Today is the Centenary anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, a battle in which there were over a million people killed or wounded on both sides.

Hitler fought in the battle. As did Anne Frank's father, war poet Wilfred Owen and JRR Tolkein. My Granddad was also there. He said to my Dad that they were sent to march into the face of the enemy with artillary which was not fit for purpose, which is why there were so many casualties on Day 1.

It doesn't always seem like we learned anything from history, no matter how much pomp and ceremony with which we commemorate it.

I took the poppy shot in Metheringham today, messing about with the selective red function on my camera again.
