Making History, A Millimeter at a Time
At the harbor, the new dredge, The Twin Lakes, is being launched very slowly, via an intricate collection of winches, rollers and air bags. Target time was "Wednesday morning," and some spectators were there as early as 630 am. This is a big deal for those that live in or around the marina. We made a great long walk of it, over the bridge and partially around the harbor, but there was a limit to how long we could stand there under the noise of the generators that were inflating the air bags. We talked to a few guys and got lots of conflicting information about what was going on. The target time was now more like noon, but it seemed to us amateurs that afternoon was a better bet. It was mostly a guy audience, weathered men of a certain age, kibbitzing, drinking coffee, hanging out. Everyone seemed in high spirits, backslapping old friends and swapping stories.
