'American Idiot' - the musical

It was at the peak of Dan's grand passion for Green Day that we bought the tickets for a musical based around their album, 'American Idiot'. I must admit that I had my doubts about it but then I'm not a big fan of musicals whereas one of Dan's earlier obsessions - many years ago now - was the 'High School Musical' trilogy. In fact. he once won his primary school talent competition performing one of the songs. 

I thought that to mitigate any potential misery should the musical turn out to be pants, we'd make a day of it. And so we went to Yo Burrito in Preston for lunch before catching the train down to Liverpool, where we were going to see the show at the legendary Empire. 

The show was actually very good and I wasn't that surprised when Dan told me later that Billie Jo from Green Day had a hand in the writing. The dancing was pretty good - speaking as someone who doesn't really 'get' dance - and the singing was excellent. The story was a little tortuous, as I'm sure is often the case with these musicals based around a pop band or, in this case, album, but that was more than compensated for by the band who were very good. (I was delighted that it was live music.)

Dan loved it, which was the most important thing, and after the show we caught the train back to Preston to see 'X-Men: Apocalypse', which was also rather enjoyable. So, if you like Green Day and musicals and burritos and trains and walking between Warrington Central and Warrington Bank Quay (thanks TrainLine) and having popcorn for dinner and X-Men films, then you'll believe me when I say it was a most excellent day out.
