Send 'em back!

This is my all-time favourite map of the Hellenic Republic and it hangs on the wall of the staircase in Glossa's community office building, lovingly known as the town hall. Mostly what I love about it is that it shows the timescale over which various Hellenic regional councils banded together to form a single state. But what I love most of all is that it shows quite clearly the upheaval caused by the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey.

Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire for approximately 400 years and during that time there was freedom of movement within the Empire. There were many Muslim communities on Hellenic soil and many Hellenic communities on Turkish soil and they had been getting along happily multiculturally for centuries. One huge spat resulted in 2 million people being forced to up sticks and move away from their ancestral homes because they weren't quite ancestral enough. 

The striped mauve areas to the right of the dotted line are where 1.3 million Turkish-speaking Hellenes were kicked out and sent West. About half a million Greek-speaking Muslims were sent in the opposite direction.

As no doubt you are aware, sending 'em back sorted all that out once and for all and there has never been any trouble between Greece and Turkey since then.
