Windmill Corner, Hawea Flat

The original windmill was built over a century ago and provided water for the township and agriculture in this area. It became obsolete when electricity arrived in the 1940's, but has remained as a feature of the Hawea Flat landscape. There are no photos of the original windmill which was smaller and had wooden paddles.

This replica was designed and built by engineer Graham Taylor, a former resident of Hawea Flat. It is 9 metres high, and is a non working monument to the original windmill, and put up by the Upper Clutha Historical Records Society in 2008.

The reason for my interest is that one of my daughters and her family lived at Hawea Flat for many years.
