By Morningside, Indeed!

This milestone has been in the blipbank for ages; we pass it often but until today have not had the opportunity to stop for a photograph.
I do like the way it is inscribed 'By Morningside' as, although that is the most direct route, it might be considered the more prestigious of any alternative.

However, there are one or two questions about this particular milestone: firstly, it does not appear in this position on the old maps but further North on the West side of Biggar Road, roughly where the Post Horse Milestone is currently situated - except that states 5 miles, not the 4 on this (I consider the PHM to have been relocated relatively recently) and it not on the route to Biggar in its current position. Secondly, it appears that some of the script has been removed on both sides at the base, as distances to Penicuik and Biggar are missing.

By and large, it seems that relocation of distance markers is not uncommon but does raise the question of reliability.
