Turkey vulture
This guy had rabbit for breakfast. I noticed a dead rabbit on the road when we left this morning at about 8 o'clock and when we got home about an hour later the rabbit was gone and this visitor was standing at the side of the road. Turkey vultures will only eat carrion; the are unable to kill prey. Their feet are totally unsuited to this as they are like a chicken's feet. It will, however, tear into a carcass of a deer using its very strong beak.
In the extras is a close up of the head. Turkey vultures use smell as much as sight to locate food and will not eat very old, rotted meat. They often have white warts on the face as can be seen here.
