The Old Forge (Sunday 19th June 2016)

Although I went to Marlborough in the afternoon and spent an hour at the Waterfront I came back without any pictures and by the time I got home rain had set in. I photographed this view on 30th May but now the Royal Purple Cotinus is in flower revealing why it is sometimes known as a Smoke Tree.

Martha and the Vandellas - Dancing In The Street (recorded 19 June 1964, Detroit MI)
Recorded on this day in 1964, this song was misinterpreted as a call to revolution as it was released during civil riots in the US, but was intended only as a party song designed to encourage dancing. Songwriters and producers Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Joe Hunter augmented the backing vocals and the Funk Brothers included three guitars, James Jamerson on bass and Marvin Gaye on drums. Marvin Gaye was also the other writer and producer of the track.
Ivy Joe Hunter...liked everything about the song except the drum track - it needed more "bump and grind." An idea hit him and he excused himself, went to his car, and brought back a crow bar. He sat on a concrete floor and said: "Roll tape." They went through the song one more time while Ivy Joe Hunter slammed the tire tool against the concrete floor on the downbeat to create one of the most defined and distinctive drum beats in Rock And Roll history. - Songfacts
