Hebrides day four, The Blackhouses
A lazy morning spent reading up on the history of Tolsta Chaolais the village where we are staying finding out about and Tigh Bhisa , the Blackhouse.
A bit of info from the visitors book tells us that Tigh Bhisa was bult by the Great Grandfather of the current owner Laura. His nickname was Bhisa, her grandmother was then named Mairi Bhisa and her mum May Bhisa. Summers were spent camping in the Blackhouse, hours past exploring the shore and rock pools. They fished for brown trout in the lochs and walked the old back road to Doune Braes. Mairi used to go to school at Doune Braes and would carry peat for the stove with her.
Laura was a local GP and with her husband restored the black house to what it is today. There is a booklet of the build which I am reading next. Laura has been working at in Aboriginal Healthcare n Australia, living in the Outback. They return home to 'relax, unwind and refresh.'
Mairi had her wedding dance in the Blackhouse ' so imagine it filled with music and people whirling and birling.' Dancing was also done on the small wooden bridge that was nearby and it's a great place to play Poohsticks.
The small village has also starred in the recent tv series This Farming Life, featuring Farms throughout Scotland and one of them being Sandy Granvilles Farm. He's a Crofter here and sells mutton and beef to places in the South of England. Quite a hard life being a Farmer here and a dying breed. The extra shows one of his Highland cows.
The Katie Morag TV series was also filmed here. The house in front of us was Katie Morags home/shop/Post Office.
Just up the road is a white house, behind an od Blackhouse that appears
in Peter Mays book Hebrides.
During the afternoon and between rain showers we went to see the Gearrannan Blackhouses. They date from the late 1800's although it feels like they have been there for much longer. It reminded me a bit of Clovelly with the houses winding their way down to the shore.
It poured with rain for the rest of the evening but we were cosy indoors.
