At Abergynolwyn Station

A really first class day today with very good weather to boot. We all took the Cambrian Coast railway for the short trip along the coast from Aberdovey to Tywyn for a trip on the Talylynn Railway to Nant Gwernal.

This narrow gauge steam railway was a pioneer in the railway preservation movement, rescued from dereliction by Tom (L T C) Rolt and a group of dedicated volunteers in the 1950s. Today, original engines, like Dolgoch, still work the line, doing the same job as they first did 150 years ago.

A trip along the line is spectacular as the little engines and smart, compact coaches rattle their way above the side of the Talylynn valley with superb views all around. Smart stations serve walks and local attractions such as the Dolgoch Falls. A half hour stop at Abergynolwyn Station on the return trip allows for the train crew and passengers to enjoy refreshments with the engine simmering in the platform.

The final part of the day involved walking back to Aberdovey along a 5 mile stretch of the Welsh Coastal Path from Tywyn. This too was spectacular. The skies were blue, with light fluffy clouds inland, a gentle breeze, sparkling seas and wonderful beach that eventually returned us to Aberdovey overlooking the Dyfi estuary.

The day was rounded off with an expansive meal cooked by Irene J. A fitting end to one of those "day of days"
