The Wedding Present.
Swannie's Mum and Jim arrived this morning so that was my cue to hide under the duvet upstairs for most of the day. Jim did some wee jobs for me, he fixed my scratchy post, as one of the poles was a bit wobbly, then he fitted a new wooden step outside that he had made to help us reach the cat flap as its higher on the new door. Swannie's Mum loves gardening so she gave a hand to sort out the back garden, it's not very big so an hour or so a couple of times a year sees it through.
After they had been out for lunch, her Mum brought in this bedspread. It really is a family heirloom. The label, hand-written by Swannie's grannie, says:
"Wedding Present
From Mother, Daddy, 1936. Spun sheep pets wool sent to Hawick , & returned as a bed spread. Don't throw it out. Give it a home somewhere. The pets were reared at Shawhead. Mum Meikle
The thick Blue Bedspread"
Mum Meikle, Swannie's grannie, had received this as a wedding present from her parents in 1936. Her father was a herd and had raised some pet lambs, orphans that were fed by hand, and when they were sheared, had sent the fleeces to somewhere in Hawick to be spun and woven into this lovely bedspread. It is very heavy and quite rough and hard as the wool would have come from Blackface sheep. You can see the lovely detail in the extra photo.
Maly really wanted to try it out but he wasn't allowed, I didn't see it at all, I was hiding. Hope you have all had a lovely Saturday, lots of love, JJ,
