Native American Fashion Show
Bella saw the monthly museum magazine in my stack of mail and declared, “Baba, I have to see this!”
“The Portland Art Museum is pleased to present Native Fashion Now, the first large-scale traveling exhibition of contemporary Native American fashion, celebrating indigenous designers from across the United States and Canada, from the 1950s to today.”
So I took her, and while some of the nuances are beyond her, she loved this leather dress with beads and very long fringes, clearly meant as a comment on the destruction of buffalo by European immigrants whose descendants now claim we need to close our borders to immigrants. Other hits for Bella were beaded high-fashion boots, some outrageous jewelry and bags, and a video of models prancing down a catwalk in feathers, fur, leather, and silk. Bella’s mother’s expertise in fashion and costuming is not wasted on this child.
More terrible news today, the vicious murder of Jo Cox in West Yorkshire. I grieve with people in the UK.
I am reading and appreciating all comments but am not able to respond until Bella’s mom returns on Sunday.
