Fanous
The 'Fanous' means light or lantern.
During Ramadan, many homes have these lanterns hanging from their balconies or in the garden. They developed from the torches used in Pharoanic times for festivals that celebrated the rising of the star Sirius.
For five days, the Ancient Egyptians celebrated the birthdays of Osiris, Horus, Isis, Seth and Nephtys - one on each day - by lighting the streets with fanous-like torches.
Traditionally, they were lit with oil or candles, but today, electricity is used.
