A fine signal box

The next station on the Eden Valley Line was at Cliburn, or a bit out of Cliburn on the edge of Whinfell Forest (wherein lies the huge holiday complex of Centre Parcs – although you would never know it was there).

The station buildings are intact and in private hands. They appear to be undergoing a deal of renovation at the moment, but it all looks to be sympathetically done.

However, it is the signal box that is most interesting. It is one of only two signal boxes still in existence on the line and it has recently been beautifully restored and is a holiday cottage. (It is actually named on the location map - and you can see where Centre Parcs is too)

So this is looking from what would have been a level crossing, the crossing that the signal box controlled. And we are looking down the line to the station on the right. The extra picture shows what it was like when in use – I’ve tried to blip a photo that replicates this view.

The station opened in 1862 (there is a date on the station building of 1860) and it closed in 1956.

We are almost at the end of the line now.
