The Lantern

During the night of 12/13 February 1322 the central tower of Ely Cathedral collapsed. A place of Christian worship since 630, the Cathedral is known as the ship of the Fens.

By 1340 this magnificent octagonal lantern, 140 feet above the Cathedral floor had been built to replace the tower. It floods the choir with natural light.
