Looking towards The Great Mewstone

Two friends and myself were completing stage 1 of The Two Moors Way today, as we had missed out on this part when our walking group had walked it.

We arrived at Wembury beach where the Great Mewstone can be seen out at sea.  Apparently in 1744 a convicted felon was deported to this island and lived there with his family for seven years.  When he left his daughter decided to stay leaving only when her husband fell off a rock and drowned.

We picked up a pebble from the beach, as the custom is to carry it all the 117 miles north to Lynmouth where you leave it on completing the walk.  The walk was a pleasant stroll through woodland and green hills with glimpses of Dartmoor in the distance.  It did begin to rain near the end and a pathway through barley fields left us feeling very wet, but it was an enjoyable walk.
