V for Victory

What, you may ask, has a statue of Wellington got to do with the letter V? Well, this statue was commissioned at the end of the Napoleonic Wars for the Victory arch at Hyde Park Corner, London. However, there was controversy due to its colossal size (30' high, 26' long and weighing 40 tons) and eventually it was moved to Aldershot, the Home of the British Army. Today the statue of Victory adorns the arch.

The statue was all but forgotten by the late twentieth century, but in 2004 underwent restoration and the surrounding shrubs cut back so that once again it can be seen and revered. More information can be found here
