And the winner is..
Two years of research and I'm proud to present 'The guide to eating in a straight line from Hillside 3' aka 'Molly's guide to Nimmenhaimen sois 8 and 13'. These rankings are a combination of how often I eat in each place, value for money and how delicious the food is. I've decided to be positive so I'm doing a top ten rather than including and slating places I don't like.
1) Mu's Katsu, soi 8.
They do one thing and they do it damn well. This is the ultimate comfort food for me. Amazing curry sauce, Katsu made fresh to order each time and some interesting Japanese/Italian fusion options if you're feeling adventurous. The interior is comfortable and relaxed, if you eat alone at the bar you'll still feel welcome. The owners come chefs are also incredibly friendly. Chicken Katsu curry is 115 THB.
2) Organic vegetable, soi 8.
Fresh, locally sourced Thai food. With the option of totally veggie or adding meat. Great flavours, quick service and reasonable prices. They also use biodegradable packaging. It's not the best interior but as a take out option it wins hands down for me. Red curry stir fried rice with vegetables will set you back 40 THB.
3) The Burmese library. Soi 8
I've not managed to find the library yet but the food is great! Tea leaf salad, duck egg curry and bean soup are my favourites but the whole menu is delicious. Grab a plastic chair, sit on the roadside and tuck into tiny plates of awesome. Dishes start at 30 THB.
4)The Salad Concept, soi 13
This place has to make the top 5 simply as I eat there weekly. Salads or wraps made to order with lots of choice as well as great soup, cake and frozen yoghurt. They offer a free topping if you bring your own take away tub. It can be hilarious sometimes how difficult it can be to get served considering the number of staff but worth it for some healthy grub. Salads start from 69 THB.
5) TongTemToh! Soi 13
This garden restaurant serves up traditonal Northern Thai cuisine and often has a queue of people going down the road. It is so worth the wait for their BBQ pork shoulder alone. In fact, anything that comes off that grill served with a sauce is worth eating.
6) Anchan Vegetarian, soi 8
Yummy veggie food with a rotating menu, the tofu in tamarind sauce is incredible. They claim you won't miss the meat and they're right! Nice surroundings although not as welcoming as some other places. Dishes for around 100 THB
7) Khao Soi 13
Khao soi is a bit of an obsession for me, and this punny place will serve you a big bowl of the spicy noodley goodness in laid back surroundings. Khao soi gai is around 60THB.
8) Mushashi Contemporary Sushi, soi 13
Modern twists on sushi, they all look fabulous and taste awesome too.
9) Why Not? Soi 13
Expat favourite, pizza, pasta, cheese and wine. Need I say more?
10) Som tam lady, soi 8
On the corner of the soi is a lovely lady who makes excellent somtam. They also do pretty good fried chicken and sausages.
Bonus- Sushi Umai ! Not technically in a straight line from my house but close enough. Best sushimi I've had in Chiang Mai. Lovely and quick service, they serve scrumptious noodles as well as sushi.
I go into Mu's Katsu regularly and saying goodbye to them (in probably hilariously bad broken Thai) was an emotional moment. One that I wasn't expecting if I'm honest. I suppose anywhere you become a regular forms a part of life. It's feeling very surreal that I leave this incredible city in less than 24 hours time.
