Sailing
Sailboarding on Turnagain Arm was the perfect way for these young men to take advantage of a gorgeous sunny day. We had to make the 130 mile trip to Anchorage today, and what a day it was to enjoy the still snow capped mountains and sparkling waters. A 50 mile stretch of the highway borders Turnagain Arm, which is an "arm" of Cook Inlet.
Captain Cook sailed into this area in the late 1700's while searching for the Northwest Passage. When he realized he had not found a passage, he had to turn around again (this wasn't the first "arm" he had explored).
Turnagain Arm has the fourth largest tidal range in the world. It is a relatively dangerous area for water sports, but also has windy conditions which many guys find irresistible.
