Poplar Hawk Moth.
At RSPB Leighton Moss this morning there were two talks, one on moths and the second on insects.
When the moth trap was opened it contained several Hawk Moths. The one in the foreground is a Poplar Hawk Moth. It uses poplars and willows. Behind it is another view of an Elephant Hawk Moth a shot of which I blipped last week. Although I pictures of them on a leaf, I have used the one on the egg boxes as this gives a good idea of size.
The talk on insects was also interesting. There are over 30,000 different insects known in the U.K. Unfortunately the rain made it difficult to go out and find many insects on the Reserve.
The extra shows a small selection of insects waiting to be identified.
